SQL Server 2000 Editions
SQL Server 2000 currently ships in seven different editions. It is critical to select the correct edition of the application in order to ensure you possess the feature set you need in production. In fact, only four of these editions are appropriate for production servers. The remaining three editions are for more specialized usage, as you will see in this section.
Enterprise Edition
If you need all of the possible features offered by SQL Server 2000, you need the Enterprise Edition. This edition supports the largest of production environments; it is the most scalable version of SQL Server 2000 currently available.
SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition installs on the following operating systems:
Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Windows 2000 Server
Windows NT 4 Server, Enterprise Edition
Windows NT 4 Server
Standard Edition
Smaller workgroups might find the SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition appropriate for their installation. It does not provide the scalability that the Enterprise Edition features, nor does it support the full feature set of SQL Server 2000.
Features not supported in this version include:
Failover clustering
Failover support
Parallel CREATE INDEX
Parallel DBCC
Log shipping
Enhanced read-ahead and scan
Indexed views
Federated Database Server
SAN Support
Graphical utilities support for language settings
In addition to the lack of the above features, the Standard Edition does not support the full set of SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services features found in the Enterprise Edition. The features missing from Analysis Services in the Standard Edition are as follows:
User-defined OLAP partitions
Linked OLAP cubes
Real-time OLAP
Partition Wizard
Relational OLAP dimension support
HTTP Internet support
Calculated cells
Writeback to dimensions
Very large dimension support
Distributed portioned cubes
SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition installs on the following operating systems:
Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Windows 2000 Server
Windows NT 4 Server, Enterprise Edition
Windows NT 4 Server
Personal Edition
For standalone application usage, or for mobile users running notebooks or other less powerful portable devices, Microsoft provides the SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition. This feature does not provide the performance found in either the Enterprise Edition or the Standard Edition. In fact, there is a workload governor that actually forces this limited performance.
The Personal Edition lacks the same features that are lacking in the Standard Edition. It also lacks:
Transactional replication support
Full-text search (if installed on Windows 98 or Windows ME)
SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition installs on the following operating systems:
Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Windows 2000 Server
Windows 2000 Professional
Windows NT 4 Server, Enterprise Edition
Windows NT 4 Server
Windows NT 4 Workstation
Windows Millennium Edition
Windows 98
Developer Edition
If you are a developer interested in creating SQL Server 2000 applications, you might be interested in the Developer Edition. This special edition is licensed only for use in development and testing and cannot be used in a production environment. The Developer Edition supports all of the features of SQL Server 2000, with one exception—it does not support graphical utilities' support for language settings.
SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition installs on the following operating systems:
Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Windows 2000 Server
Windows 2000 Professional
Windows NT 4 Server, Enterprise Edition
Windows NT 4 Server
Windows NT 4 Workstation
Evaluation Edition
Microsoft makes it very easy to learn, test, and evaluate SQL Server 2000 by providing a complimentary copy of the Enterprise Edition–the Evaluation Edition. This version stops running 120 days after installation. The Evaluation Edition supports all of the features of SQL Server 2000, with one exception—it does not support graphical utilities' support for language settings.
SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Evaluation Edition installs on the following operating systems:
Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Windows 2000 Server
Windows 2000 Professional
Windows NT 4 Server, Enterprise Edition
Windows NT 4 Server
Windows NT 4 Workstation
Windows CE Edition
Windows CE Edition of SQL Server 2000 provides robust data storage services on Windows CE devices. SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition is especially effective when the CE devices are connected to the network and accessing larger SQL Server 2000 systems using Remote Data Access (RDA) components. Windows CE Edition also performs well in wireless networks. It accomplishes this through the use of data compression and messaging to reduce the size of data transmissions. SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition installs on Windows CE.
Desktop Engine
The Desktop Engine Edition of SQL Server 2000 is a redistributable version of the SQL Server 2000 relational database engine. Developers that need robust data storage capabilities in an application can license this special version of SQL Server 2000. Naturally, this version requires no end-user administration and ships with no graphical utilities or tools.
The Desktop Engine Edition lacks the same features that are lacking in the Personal Edition. In addition, the Desktop Edition does not have full-text search capabilities; nor does it have graphical administration and developer tools and wizards. Finally, Desktop Edition does not support Analysis Services.
SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine addition installs on the following operating systems:
Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Windows 2000 Server
