A method to create page numbers for multiple pages
Although FreeHand does not currently have an auto-numbering functionality for multiple pages, a relatively-simple method exists to make page numbers. The method presented in this TechNote involves making and duplicating text blocks, then using the spell check feature to change them. The example in the steps below will place page numbers in the lower right corner of the each page.
Creating and editing text blocks which will hold page numbers 1 Choose Text > Spelling and check the spelling throughout the entire document. Make certain to correct every spelling error the checker finds. Click Add or Change on the spell checker dialog box whenever necessary to correct the spelling of a word. Once the spell-checking procedure is complete, run it one more time to be certain there aren't any more words that the checker will stop on.
2 On the first page in the document, create a small text block near the area of the page that the page number is to appear.
3 Inside the text block, type the word Page, a space, and the highest number which will be used in the document. For example, if the document contains 23 pages, enter Page 23 in the text block. Since this will be the size of the largest page number text block in the document, it can be used to accurately position the page number text block. Set the font, size, style and color as desired. For example use Arial or Helvetica, size 12, bold, and black color.
Note: Text may appear as a Gary block depending upon the magnification set for the document.
4 With the text block selected, open the Object inspector and make certain that the text block is not auto-expanding. If it is, click the two auto-expansion toggle buttons so neither are selected.

Double-click the overflow box at the lower right of the text block to contract the borders tightly around the text.
6 Choose Text > Align > Right to right-align the text block.
7 Drag one horizontal and one vertical guide out of the page rulers to snap the lower right corner of the text block to. Place them as desired on both page one and page two of the document.
Note: If the page rulers are not visible, choose View > Page Rulers > Show. If the text block will not snap to the guides, turn snapping on by choosing View > Guides > Snap to Guides.
8 Drag the text block near the guides and snap its lower right edge to the junction of the guides. The right and bottom lines of the text block's border will turn red when the text block snaps to the guides.
9 If necessary, change the magnification of the document to 100 % or greater. Once the text block is positioned, place the Pointer tool inside the text block and double-click it to open it for editing. Highlight all the text inside, and replace it with a short, deliberately misspelled word.
In the example below, a text block with 12-point bold Arial type has been snapped to guides, placed at v576 and h36, and the word Pqage has replaced the original text.
10 Deselect the text block and reselect it with the Pointer tool.
11 Choose Edit > Clone to make an exact duplicate of the text block directly on top of the original.
12 Choose View > Magnification > 50%, and make certain pages one and two are visible.
13 With the arrow tool, start dragging the duplicate text block to the right. Press the shift key after you begin dragging to constrain the text block's movement to horizontal only. Snap the text block to the junction of the guides on page two.
Note: Do NOT MOVE or DESELECT the text block at this point.
14 Choose Edit > Duplicate. This will place a copy of the text block in the exact same position on page three that it is on page two.
Note: Power-duplicating is the process of repeating one or more transformations on successive duplicates of an object. Since the text block was moved a specific amount of space to the right, a second duplication will move the third copy of the text block the same distance from the second as the second is from the first.
15 Continue choosing Edit > Duplicate until there is a copy of the page number text block on each page in the document. Press tab to deselect the text block.
Note: Steps 12 - 15 are only valid if all of your pages are equidistant from each other, and horizontally aligned. If they are not, the text block must be manually pasted onto each page.
16 Select the first page (1) from the Go to Page pop-up menu at the located at the bottom of the FreeHand application window. This makes page 1 the active page.
17 When the page number text block has been placed on each page, choose Text > Spelling and click the Start button.
18 As the spell-checking procedure finds each instance of the page number text block containing the misspelled word, replace it with the content you actually want. For example, it will find the one on page one first. Replace 'Pqage' with 'Page 1'. Continue replacing the misspelled word until each page has a number.
Note: This should be the very last thing you do before your project is complete. Since these text blocks are not auto-generated in any way, they will NOT update if you reorder the pages on the pasteboard
