With 66 minutes in the main program, 13 minutes of behind-the-scenes extras, 35 minutes of bonus films, 30 minutes of bonus music and free HD stock video clips from YouWorkForThem, Stash 51 is a monster issue packed with almost two hours of jolting inspiration.

We start in South America with the joyous and lyrical new GOL Airline spot from Lobo and the quirk-ilicious Lucchetti campaign from Madre and PepperMelon, both of which raise the art of stylized 3D character animation several degrees. Then we’re off to London for some big-league VFX from The Mill for Barclaycard and from MPC for Fredrik Bond’s latest Guinness epic called “Fridge Magnets”. We round out the opening volley of commercials with Shy The Sun cooking up more of their baroque brilliance for Bakers biscuits, Glassworks getting naked for Schweppes, and Pierre Michel playing with fire and the feminine form for Loris.

“Peripetics”, the mind-shifting fine art video in six acts from London’s Zeitguised, provides a good palette-cleansing before we tuck into some savory broadcast morsels from Buck, Partizan Lab, Mateuniverse and Agile via DixonBaxi for Channel 5, also the new Sky rebrand campaign from MPC, Dvein’s newest macro-fantastic work for National Geographic, and we finish with sweet new event opens from Resin for the 2008 AGDA awards and from Dancing Diablo for the Boards Summit.

There is only one thing to do when you hit 50: slam together the most enormous, most killer-est Stash ever. That means 99 minutes of lobe-lashing inspiration on the main disk, including six bonus short films, PLUS ten behind-the-scenes features, PLUS 76 minutes on the bonus disk (including the latest work from Post Panic, Parasol Island, Gazz, Dinamo Digital, Digital Kitchen, and Bent Image Lab), PLUS 3D glasses for watching the short film featured on the cover – “3D Machine” from Ka-Ching Cartoons.

It’s our biggest issue ever and it leads off with spoken word artist Ainsley Burrows wrapped in the power and beauty of Shilo’s new Guinness spot then dips and dives through a maniacal mash-up including Paranoid US and Digital District doubling down for Nike, Digital Domain pumping up the Honda Fit, Velvet bathing German supermodel Hana Soukupova in haute water, Absolute getting tough for Fredrik Bond and Levis, Stylewar and Swiss International staging a cinematic invasion, and Axis Animation bringing Ben Hibon’s fantastic new creatures to life for the Renault Clio.

The broadcast design section on 50 launches with the potent gumbo of sex, religion, and violence from Digital Kitchen for Alan Ball’s “Trueblood” on HBO before rolling through a buffet of styles and moods including Tronic for “Next World”, Todd Francis and ka-chew! for Fuel TV, and Deli Pictures and Glassworks for MTV Switch.

The back half of Stash 50 is a creative minefield designed to keep you off kilter with stellar work from serious talent including King and Country, Passion Pictures, Blizzard Entertainment, Superfad, Resolution, Akama Studio, Vetor Zero, AixSponza and Minivegas.

And, as usual, there’s no end of shiny new talent to watch, including Seagulls Fly from Buenos Aires, Helio Vega from Madrid, Ben West from Sydney, Aggressive from New York, Option-G from LA, Graffects from Atlanta and Blok Design from Mexico who teamed up with Crush for the “Arte en Construccion” event open.

Another new name we discovered this month, Ka-Ching Cartoons from Rotterdam, contributed our fun and fabulous closing film (and cover project) called “3D Machine”.

The six BONUS FILMS on Stash 50 were all selected for screening at the 2008 edition of the prestigious Ottawa International Animation Festival. Running 34 minutes, our most generous bonus film program ever includes: “A Letter to Colleen” by Andy and Carolyn London, “Intergalactic Who’s Who” by Kevin D. A. Kurytnik and Carol Beecher, “Emily in the Clouds” by Clayton Mitchell, “Race Across the Rainbow” by Jackson He, “Berni’s Doll” by Yann Jouette, and “A Sheep on the Roof” by Remy Schaepman.

Stash Issue 48 | 3GB
Stash’s 4th anniversary issue is a raucous and volatile celebration. From crooning broken hearts to butt-kicking Chinese monkeys, Stash 48 is a 75-minute adventure in constant inspiration.

Let’s start with the big name special guests, all of whom arrive this month via groundbreaking music videos: Radiohead is here via “House of Cards” shot using lasers instead of cameras; Michael Stipe and REM re-team with Crush for more crunchy exuberance on “Man-sized Wreath”; 80’s icon Grace Jones re-invades pop culture with “Corporate Cannibal” a jarring new effort by Nick Hooker (on the cover); and Gradient Effects puts their heart into “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul” for the Gnarls Barkley industrial complex.

On the commercial front: Joe Kosinski and Digital Domain are back for more brooding and brutality from Delta Squad in the new Gears of War spot; The Gorillaz and Passion Pictures director Pete Candeland monkey-about for BBC Olympic coverage; Bent Image Lab animates everything from gaseous Legos to cranky Russian nesting dolls for Milk; Mr. Hyde makes great CG strides for the Royal Bank of Canada; Psyop cuts up with Santogold; Julian Casablancas, and N.E.R.D. on the “My Drive -Thru” video for Converse; and Commercial wunderguys Smith & Foulkes give us a taste of their first feature film with the trailer for “This Way Up”.

Highlights from the broadcast design section include fresh new MTV branding IDs from Austrian duo Eat My Dear through PostPanic, an inventive series of sponsorship tags for Toyota from Zeitguised, brand new Zune fun from Nando Costa and Nervo, and two breakout MTV show opens from Stash newcomers Ronda.

And speaking of fresh talent, here are the other new kids to watch for on Stash 48: AOKIstudio from Tokyo, Lowerground from Hamburg, Pitch White from Los Angeles, Kristian Labusga from Stuttgart Media University, Prickly Pear from Dublin, Zurich 29 and Editors from Paris and Underground Economy hiding at Sealevel in Venice, California.

As usual there is too much content and too little space to do it all justice so here’s a quick taste of other important new work you’ll find on Stash 48: A52 for Nike, Aardman for Leonard Cheshire Disability, ManvsMachine for Space, Imaginary Forces for the Museum of Modern Art in New York, National Television for Hyundai, Daysview Digital for XGMA and Leftchannel for themselves.

The three BONUS FILMS on Stash make up the fourth installment of our Student Mini-Film Fest and include: “Fallen ” by Wolfram Kampffmeyer and Sascha Geddert from the Filmakademie Baden – Wuerttemberg; “Dive: A Creative Process” by Tyquane Wright at NYU; and “Plant” by Selcuk Ergen from Bournemouth University in the UK.

The BONUS MUSIC on Stash 48 arrives courtesy of the beautiful and talented people at Kemado Records (and our music Editor Steve Marchese) – you’ll find seven MP3s including ear-expanding work from Dungen, Turzi, Langhorne Slim, Danava, TK Webb & The Visions, O’Death and Audionom.

Nobody reads the editorial, I said. It’s a magazine, they said, you gotta have an editorial. But it’s not like a magazine magazine with all the silly reading and stuff. Good point, they said, still need the editorial. There’s nothing to write, I said, you watch the disk, you look at the pictures, you eat your sandwich-- Oh, they said, and you need a head shot. No pictures. Just a small one. No pictures. Okay, okay, they said, but people are expecting the editorial. To do what?
