Fusion (formerly Digital Fusion) is an image compositing software program created by eyeon Software Inc. It is typically used to create visual effects and digital compositing for film, HD and commercials. It employs a node-based interface in which complex processes are built up by connecting a flowchart or schematic of many nodes, each of which represents a simpler process, such as a blur or color correction. This type of compositing interface allows great flexibility, including the ability to modify the parameters of an earlier image processing step "in context" (while viewing the final composite).


Fusion is available for 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Microsoft Windows and Linux (via a customized version of Wine).

Run by Professor Gary M. Davis - this course opens the door to 3D for those who might have always been keen to learn but found 3D intimidating. Gary does international training for Autodesk and is an expert in 3d Max, Combustion and Toxik. These accelerated session focus on 3ds Max but will also address compositing issues using Autodesk Combustion. That being said, these aspects easily apply to using any compositing application you might currently be utilizing in your facility. These classes were specifically designed for individuals with existing compositing and/or editing experience looking to add 3ds Max to their toolkit.

Class 1 UI and Workflow Essentials of Autodesk 3ds Max: User preferences, basic UI navigation, creating and naming primitives, the modifier stack, editing pivot points, basic hierarchies and selections, setting up a project to proportion and scale (for various types of client deliverable).
Class 2 Modeling Fundamentals: Creating and editing 2d splines shapes, lathe and extrude, box modeling basics (aka ?Sub-D modeling), export considerations going to *.FBX & *.3DS formats (for export to use in Flame, Fusion, Nuke, etc.).
Class 3 Cameras: Basic camera types, cameras on paths, Camera Projection/Mapping, modeling for perspective matching (Matte Painting & Set Extensions), material considerations.
Class 4 Material Editor: Common Shader setups, working with material libraries, using HDR images as map types, applying materials to imported stock-art models.
Class 5 Lighting Essentials: Basic light types and common setups, shadow types, attenuation, simple Global Illumination (?GI?) solutions.
Class 6Animation: Time configuration, keyframing, auto/manual keyframing, ease curves, timeline tools and editing, fundamental animation controller types including audio controllers and motion capture using a mouse.
Class 7 Rendering Part 1 & 2 ? Basic Output Considerations, Render Elements : Organizing MAX projects for Render Passes (i.e.: fore/mid/back ground renders), essential output file format considerations including full HDR/Floating-point renderings using Mental Ray.
Setting up render elements, UI locations of various features, accommodating render element output, format considerations (cont.), Scanline and Mental Ray explored.
Class 8 Rendering Part 3 & 4 ? The RPF File Format G-Buffers explained, 3ds Max UI locations of RPF hooks, RPF file rendering, advanced uses for RPF within Combustion.
Class 9 Depth of Field and Motion Blur: Various options for both depth of field and motion blur will be explored. These include solutions within 3ds Max as well as ways of doing these effects as a post process in compositing software.
Class 10 Motion Graphics and Broadcast: The text tool within 3ds Max will be explored in depth here. Broadcast considerations such as color safe, field rendering, bit-depth, resolution (over-rendering), animated graphic designs, creating looping animations.

Fred continues to work as a CGI Artist & Compositor at EdenFX where he was recently nominated and awarded a 2004 Emmy Award as well as a 2004 VES (Visual Effects Society) Award for his work on Paramount Studios Star Trek Enterprise.

Matt Leonard leads our intermediate Fusion course at fxphd, building upon his 100-level introductory course. Since members have learned the basics in FUS101, Leonard will cover using the app on a project basis, tackling scenes over several classes in order to show how to truly get the most out of the software. From greenscreen keying, to tracking and using 3D projections, to graphics design, you'll see why Fusion is used by so many different types of artists.
Leonard's sphereVFX company has been doing Fusion training for years, including creating an intermediate level DVD for the app. Leonard has worked in the animation and visual effects industry for over sixteen years producing state-of-the-art work for feature films, broadcast and commercials in the UK and US markets..

Class 1: I Love Sarah Jane, House Damage We start our new course with a straightforward visual effects shot taken from the short film, "I Love Sarah Jane". In this class we'll look at transforming a smart residential home into a busted up, graffiti scrawled, zombie trashed house. We'll use a collection of techniques including roto, tracking, paint, colour correction and much more.

Class 2: Robots and Wendy House Our second project for the course spans three weeks and involves adding multiple CGI robots into a handheld, live action plate shot on the RED camera. The shot will involve multiple compositing tricks including multi-pass renders, tracking, roto, sky replacements, colour correction, and a bunch of integration techniques such as light-warps, edge-blurs, and more.

Class 3: In the second of three classes covering the Wendy House and CGI Robots we focus on Material/Object ID customization, Camera Projections and Normals.

Class 4: Continuation

Class 5: Motion Graphics in Fusion Our next project spans a couple of weeks and really shifts gears into the area of motion graphics. Our project is to create on-screen graphics similar to those seen in Iron Man, Minority Report or The Island. We'll be using a mixture of live action along with graphical elements created in Photoshop and Fusion. All these will be treated to create a very animated, stylised, motion graphics look.

Class 6: Continuation

Class 7: Lexus Commercial In yet another three week project we create the illusion of a camera pull back through the inside a car while driving down the road. What we have to work with is quiet different; a stationary car shot on a green-screen stage. To pull off this complicated shot we'll be looking at creating a 3D pan and tile environment, adding contact lighting, realistic reflections and a host of tricks to create the illusion for a moving car.

Class 8: Continuation

Class 9: Continuation

Class 10: Aftermath This shot, originally created by Theodor Groeneboom, shows off Fusions 3D and particle tools to the max. This final class goes step by step through the process of creating a building explosion from a single photograph. We'll be covering a whole mixture of techniques and tools including camera projection, particles, colour correction, paint, roto, to name a few.
